Nature restoration projects in Ibiza, by Regenera Natura

About the Project

Desert Leaves has supported two initiatives implemented, both technically and operationally, by Regenera Natura, the organisation responsible for the project design, reforestation work, land management and the biodiversity survey.

Forest restoration in Cala Xarraca

The forest restoration project at Cala Xarraca, situated in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja (Ibiza), covers an area of 6.78 hectares, where Regenera Natura plants more than 4,000 specimens of native species such as Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), Prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) and Kermes oak (Quercus coccifera).  The initiatives aim to achieve key environmental objectives: to halt soil loss due to erosion, to reduce the risk of wildfires through forest clearing and the creation of firebreaks, to protect vegetation from sea winds, and to capture CO₂ over an estimated period of 30 years. Furthermore, the initiative promotes the conservation of endemic species and pollinators, combating the severe effects of climate change and drought on the island.

With the support of Desert Leaves, Regenera Natura not only promotes the ecological recovery of the environment, but also organises environmental education sessions and community partnerships, strengthening the resilience of Ibiza’s forests for future generations.

Forest and environmental regeneration in Rafal Trobat

The Rafal Trobat valley, situated in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, covers 24 hectares characterised by a mature, ageing and densely packed forest, with a high risk of wildfires and abandoned agricultural plots. Thanks to the technical intervention by Regenera Natura, a 5-hectare firebreak has been created, reducing the amount of plant fuel through selective felling.

In addition, 1.5 hectares of land traditionally used for agriculture are being restored through the planting of 145 olive trees and 120 almond trees, thereby restoring the area’s scenic and ecological value. The project also includes the ethnographic restoration of a historic ‘forn de calç’, the creation of integrated footpaths and a comprehensive biodiversity monitoring plan.

Through Desert Leaves’ support for Regenera Natura’s work, we are promoting a model of sustainable forest management that not only increases the climate resilience of Ibiza’s forests, but also engages the local community through educational activities, guided walks and awareness-raising workshops.
